NEW DELHI — The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear Satish Sana, the businessman on whose statement CBI Director Alok Verma had filed a corruption FIR against Special Director Rakesh Asthana. The apex court will hear Sana’s petition on Tuesday.

In his application, Sana has reportedly prayed for stay on the summons issued to him by CBI or recording of his statement in the presence of Justice A K Patnaik (Retd.) Justice Patnaik was appointed by the top court on Friday (26th October) to monitor the Chief Vigilance Commissioner’s probe against Verma.

In his statement to the CBI, Satish Sana had claimed he paid a bribe of Rs. 2 crore to Asthana to be spared any action in an investigation linked to meat exporter Moin Qureshi. The money was paid over a 10-month period — starting from December 2017 to October 2018.

In a midnight coup in the intervening night of 23-24 October, the central government sent both Verma and Asthana on leave, effectively divesting them of their powers, and appointed IPS officer M Nageswara Rao as interim CBI chief. The government took action two days after Verma filed the FIR against Asthana. Asthana had also made similar corruption allegations against Verma.

Hours after the government order, Verma moved the Supreme Court on Wednesday. While hearing his petition on Friday, the top court stopped the interim chief of CBI not to take any policy decision until next order. It also asked the CVC to complete its probe against Verma in two weeks. It also directed that Justice A K Patnaik (Retd.) will monitor the probe.

The Opposition parties attacked the Narendra Modi government over the midnight coup at CBI. They charged that Verma was removed because he was about to start probe into the multi-billion Rafale deal.
