NEW DELHI – Terming Prime Minister and Union home minister’s statements on the NRC and NPR as “white lies”, Indian Union Muslim League’s Delhi Unit on Saturday demanded resignation of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for grave crimes and brutalities committed by UP Police on unarmed protesters, especially the Muslim community in the state.
IUML also demanded that “the CM should be arrested and tried as he was solely responsible the death of more than two dozen people in the state. It also called Union Minority Affairs Minister Abbas Naqvi “showboy” of the BJP government.
Addressing a press conference here, senior IUML leader Prof. Baseer Ahmad Khan, who is also former Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University and In-charge of IUML (Delhi Pradesh), said BJP government at the Center and in states were responsible for the prevailing disturbing situation. Prof Khan severely came down on the UP CM accusing him of giving license to the state police to resort lethal means for suppressing the peaceful demonstrations.
“He (Yogi) instigated the police by his threatening statements in which he talked of revenge which resulted in the death of about two dozen people who were peacefully protesting against the discriminatory citizenship law,” he said.
He said the CM Yogi must be reminded that the oath taken on this very constitution under which they have formed their government is being violated which is not acceptable.
While demanding his arrest and resignation, Prof Khan said,” Yogi is an accused in more than a dozen criminal cases including rioting and distributing peace in the state, and he is solely responsible for the prevailing restive situation in UP” and adding that, “ Without sacking him the peace cannot be restored in the state.”
By his utterances and actions, the CM has lost legal and moral right to rule the state, he further added.
Slamming the RSS and BJP leaders for calling anti-CAA protestors as “anti-Indian and anti-national”, he said by appeasing the hardcore and radical Hindu constituency, the BJP can win elections but cannot run the government and the nation. Because of their stubborn behavior and unreasonableness, India’s reputation has been tarnished in the world but they do not bother about the interest of nation, he said.
Taking a dig at the PM’s pet slogan of “Sab ka Saath aur Sab Kaa vikas”, he said not a single member is from the Muslim community in BJP’s parliamentary party. He also criticized the statement of minority minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on the CAA calling him a “showboy” in the BJP government. Their attempts to turn the present protest into a Hindu and Muslim have been failed miserably as all sections of people and students from all universities are joining the protest, he added.
Defending the Jamia Milia Islamia, and Aligarh Muslim University students, he said the UP police even used stun grenades on the AMU students.
On the role of judiciary, Prof Khan said it was sad to say that without even listening to the Jamia students’ petition, the Chief Justice of India had rejected it saying what if they were students who broke the law.
He said IUML would boycott the NPR as it is a backdoor effort to bring NRC. He said the PM must assure the nation in no uncertain terms that his government will not implement NRC.
