PASIGHAT — The Congress on Wednesday alleged that a “cash for votes” scam was busted in Arunachal Pradesh with the recovery of Rs 1.8 crore in cash from Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s convoy.

The expenditure observers, an Election Commission team, in the early hours of Wednesday seized Rs 1.80 crore in Pasighat area of the hill state, Arunachal Pradesh, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally around 11.45 p.m on Wednesday.

Opposition Congress alleged that the money was seized from two vehicles used in the Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s carcade and that it was being taken to be distributed in the rally of the Prime Minister.

Congress has asked the poll panel to register a case against Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as the chief minister and his deputy.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala demanded Khandu and his deputy Chowna Mein should be immediately sacked, and also sought the termination of the candidature of Tapir Gao, the BJP’s Arunachal Pradesh president who has been fielded from the Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency, reports PTI.

Surjewala reportedly showed two videos purportedly showing the cash being recovered in the presence of officials of the Election Commission, the local administration and the police.

Alleging a cash for votes scandal in Arunachal Pradesh, Surjewala said, “Facing imminent defeat, a desperate BJP is resorting to ‘money power’ in the northeast.

“Why is the Election Commission sleeping and not taking action in the matter and not registered a case so far. Why is the case being hushed up?” he asked.

Surjewala also asked whether this cash was reportedly transferred for Modi’s morning rally in Pasighat.

“Isn’t concealing and hoarding cash during an election a ‘corrupt practice’ and a serious violation of law under Section 123(1) of the Representation of the People Act 1951 and Section 171B of the IPC and a solid ground for termination of candidature?” he sought to know.

According to reports, two vehicles were parked at the Pasighat government guest house Tuesday night where Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy CM Chowna Mein and state BJP president Tapir Gao spent the night.

Additional Chief Electoral Officer (ACEO) of Arunachal Pradesh Kangki Darang told reporters in Itanagar that on Tuesday at around 9.30 pm, the “flying squad” team raided and seized the cash from the two vehicles, reports The Indian Express.

He said that the Rs 1crore in the Scorpio has been claimed by BJP’s candidate from the Mebo Assembly seat Danggi Perme’s son Christopher. Sources said the car was registered to his name. Darang also said that Rs 80 lakh recovered from the Fortuner has been claimed by ex-MLA Ralom Borang.

Darang said he did not know the details about the vehicles. He added that the case has been handed over to the Income Tax department. According to him, over Rs 5.5 crore has been seized across the state so far.
