RJD Snubs Three Muslim MLAs Who Switched Sides From AIMIM

The move ignites debates on political loyalty and minority representation in Bihar polls

PATNA – In a surprising move, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has denied election tickets to three Muslim legislators who had previously joined the party from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). The decision has ignited political debates and raised concerns about minority representation within the state’s political landscape.

The affected legislators include Muhammad Izhar Asfi from Kochadhaman, Syed Ruknuddin Ahmad from Baisi, and Mohammad Anzar Naeemi from Bahadurganj. All three had switched allegiance from AIMIM to RJD following the 2020 elections. Despite their previous support for the party, RJD has opted to field new candidates in these constituencies.

A senior RJD leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “The decision was made after careful consideration of the party’s strategic interests and the need to field candidates who align with our current vision.” However, this rationale has not been well received by the sidelined legislators.

Muhammad Izhar Asfi expressed his dismay, stating, “I joined RJD with the belief that we would work together for the betterment of our constituencies. To be denied a ticket now is disheartening.” Similarly, Syed Ruknuddin Ahmad remarked, “Our supporters trusted us to represent them. This decision undermines that trust.”

The only former AIMIM legislator to receive a ticket is Shahnawaz Alam, who will contest again from Jokihat. Alam, the son of former Union Minister Mohammad Taslimuddin, is considered a political heavyweight, giving him an advantage in retaining his seat.

Political analysts suggest that this move by RJD may have implications for the party’s relationship with Muslim voters. “While the party may have its reasons, excluding these legislators could alienate a significant portion of the electorate,” said Dr Farhan Qureshi, a political observer based in Patna.

As the election date approaches, all eyes are on how this decision will impact RJD’s standing among minority communities and whether it will influence the voting patterns in the upcoming assembly elections.
