YANGON — Communal riots-hit Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city, remained calm Saturday following imposition of curfew in one more area since Friday night, the local police said.

Preventive security measures have also been taken in some areas where the riots could recur.

Most of the shops opened in downtown Mandalay and residents were travelling normally around the city, a local resident told Xinhua.

The series of communal clashes started Tuesday night with hundreds of rioters attacking a tea shop in Chanaye Tharzan township of Mandalay after its Muslim owner was prosecuted in a rape case. The clashes left two people dead and 14 wounded.

The curfew, which bans gatherings of more than five people, was imposed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. in all townships of Mandalay.

Mandalay police said they were investigating the riots and would take action against those involved in the attack.–IANS
