Renowned Islamic Scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi Passes Away

The Egyptian scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi  was well-known across the Muslim world.

NEW DELHI — The Egyptian-born, renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi passed away on Monday at the age of 96 in Qatar, according to a post on his official Twitter account.

His son, Abdul Rahman Yusuf al-Qaradawi, confirmed the news on his Twitter account.

The Doha-based International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS) also confirmed the scholar’s death in a statement on its website.

The spiritual leader of Muslim Brotherhood Sheikh Al-Qaradawi had been living in exile in Qatar since 2013 and he was granted the Qatari citizenship. He was highly critical of the coup that overthrew Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in 2013.

Yusuf al-Qaradawi was tried and sentenced to death in absentia in Egypt in 2015.

Al-Qaradawi had previously been in exile from Egypt prior to the 2011 revolution that overthrew former President Hosni Mubarak.

He was also chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars since it was established in 2004 and held this position for 14 years.

Al-Qaradawi has published more than 120 books, including The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam and Islam: The Future Civilization. He has also received eight international prizes for his contributions to Islamic literature, and was considered one of the most influential Islamic scholars.

Qaradawi is best known for his programme ا”Sharia and Life” broadcast on Al Jazeera, which has an estimated audience of 40–60 million worldwide.

His influences included Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn Qayyim,Sayyid Rashid Rida, Hassan al-Banna, Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi, Maulana Abul A’la Maududi and Naeem Siddiqui.
