NEW DELHI – A Muslim boy was brutally beaten up and his back was pierced with an iron rod after he refused to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in the Bhaujpur area of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh on Friday. The incident has come to light after a video of the boy surfaced on social media.

SHO of Bhaupur police station Prabhat Dixit told Clarion India that they have registered an FIR and arrested two accused Ankit and Manish, who are from Sathari. “We are trying to arrest more accused,” he said.

All the 10-15 accused are unknown in the case. The police have invoked 147, 149, 301, 504, 406, 427 and 7CLA against them. “We have increased 7CLA later because these people beat him up after blocking his way. 7CLA is a serious section. That’s why it was invoked,” he said.

7CLA or Section 7 in the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1932 deals with the offence of molesting a person to prejudice of employment or business.

Asked why attempt to murder charge was not invoked against the accused, Dixit said the injury was not that severe. “We may increase more Sections later,” he added. But he described the offence “a hate crime”.

“The victim was intercepted, beaten up and his bike was damaged. He was attacked for no reason. It’s a hate crime,” he said.

However, Zeeshan, the victim, alleged that initial response of the police was hostile. Though he was beaten up for refusing to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’, the police allegedly asked him to drop this charge for registering his case.

Narrating the whole incident in the video, he said: “I was coming from Tori, the hometown of my aunt. On the way around a school, two men came in front of me and asked me ‘where are you going?’ I told them I’m going to Masuri and coming from Tori. Out of a blue they tore my clothes, broke my bike and asked me to chant Jai Shri Ram. When I refused, they started thrashing me… They had a gun with which they hit me. Then one of them pierced an iron nail in my back, hand and waist. When I started bleeding, they ran away,” Zeeshan said in a video doing rounds on social media.

Zeeshan alleged that when he went to the nearby police station and narrated his ordeal, the SHO asked him to drop the charge of ‘Jai Shri Ram’. It was his condition to register my case, he said.

Zeeshan faced another challenge in the government hospital of Bhaujpur where he was sent for treatment. There he was refused treatment on the pretext that there was no doctor. He said two more people who had received injuries along with him also remained without any treatment. Then they were taken to a hospital in Modinagar. Here, the doctor simply wrote medicines without dressing their wounds, he alleged.

Apparently the police was forced to register the case after the video of Zeeshan surfaced on Twitter. Ghaziabad Police put up a statement on its Twitter account informing the public about the arrests. It also claimed that the issue of forcing people to chant a particular slogan has not been verified.

According to the police, one man was also beaten up along with Zeeshan.
