Rape and You

Rape-EpidemicTill you change, society won’t. No amount of candle light vigils, protests, silent marches and violent morchas will change the rape scene in India, till our attitude to women changes

ROBERT CLEMENTS

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]o you are horrified by the rape of Esther. Horrified by the Delhi brutal gang rape! You joined your friends in condemning the police, joined your family in condemning India. There is not a moment when you don’t talk about conditions deteriorating in the country!

Ever thought these rapes are linked to you? That you have played as much a role in the assault on innocents as those macho, fly scratching men who stand at street corners and ogle everyone, from school children to grandmothers?

How long does it take at a party, before you and your buddies start snide, then lewd then crass jokes about women, girls, certainly not your sister but quite often a neighbor’s wife, a confidently dressed woman, a pretty child?

Sure your wife is out of earshot then, your daughter wouldn’t think her father says such stuff, your secretary if you are meeting at work knows her buxom figure as she leaves your cabin is being viewed with more than normal interest by you and your cronies.

Till you change, society won’t. No amount of candle light vigils, protests, silent marches and violent morchas will change the rape scene in India, till our attitude to women changes.

Your son, watches as your working wife rushes home from the Andheri Fast where she has squeezed herself in, so that you, his majesty will be served by dinner in time, the onions were peeled in the train!

And if God forbid she is fifteen minutes late, the neighbors know the sounds from your flat are not from your TV. Your son watches as his mother is treated a little more than the maid who comes to wash your dishes.

He then goes out into the world, woos his woman, then roughly shows her the corner she belongs. Those rapists are sons of fathers like us!

And still we are horrified by the rape of Esther. Horrified by the Delhi brutal rape! Joined your friends in condemning the police, joined your family in condemning India! There is not a moment when we don’t talk about conditions deteriorating in the country!

Ever thought these rapes are linked to you? That you played as much a role in the assault of innocents as those macho, fly scratching men who stand at street corners and ogle women?

The men in khaki aren’t interested, because they know who the rapist is: One day when you go to the police station and cry, “Police, police, a woman is being raped!”

“Arrest him!”

“Arrest whom? What are you doing? Why are you handcuffing me? Who do you think I am?”

“You are the rapist sir..!”
