LUCKNOW — With a clear but obviously undeclared motive to polarize voters in the garb of ‘Ram Temple’ vow, a Rath Yatra is setting off from Ayodhya on Tuesday and will travel through six states including poll-bound Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, and Kerala – the state where BJP has been struggling to strengthen its place.

Though being taken out by a little-known social organization from Maharashtra, the yatra is being supported by Vishwa Hindu Parishad or VHP, a key member of the Sangh Parivar.

Not coincidentally, the yatra has set off just days ahead of the Supreme Court begins regular hearing in the title suit of the Babri Masji-Ram Janmabhoomi case.

Since the 1980s when the BJP began movement for construction of a Ram Temple on the site of the 15th century Babri Masjid, the party has used the issue as a political and electoral tool.

Babri Masjid was razed to ground on December 6, 1992 by a mob of thousands of Hindus in the presence of top BJP and RSS leaders – most of them are still facing court trial in the case. The demolition was end result of an infamous Rath Yatra of L.K Advani which had left a trail of blood and riot behind in several states.

The current yatra rechristened as “Ram Rajya Rath Yatra” will start from Karsevakpuram — a workshop set up in Ayodhya by the VHP in the 1990s, where workers carve pillars in the hope they will be used in the construction of the Ram Temple one day – and will pass through six states over the next two months before ending at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
