NEW DELHI — Weeks after a Muslim student committed suicide after being mentally tortured in Rajasthan’s Nagaur, his family members filed a complaint with the Superintendent of Police (SP) alleging that they were being harassed.

Razzaq, a 17-year-old student at Poonamchand Bajariya School in Churu district, took his own life on 31 January leaving behind a suicide note containing the names of his tormentors. On 16 March, Rustam Khan, brother of Razzaq, filed a complaint with the SP lamenting that no action had been taken in the case after the registration of an FIR on 3 March.

“All the accused were named in the complaint and the suicide note. But no action has so far been taken in this regard due to political pressure. Besides, the family of the victim is being harassed in different ways,” reads the complaint.

Bhajan Lal, SHO of Ladnu police station in Nagaur district, acknowledged to Clarion India that an FIR has been lodged in the case. “We are still investigating it. The accused have not yet been arrested. They will be arrested if they don’t cooperate in the investigation, SHO Lal told Clarion India over the phone.

When asked about family members’ allegation of being harassed by the accused, Lal said that their home falls in Turu District. They should file a complaint with the nearest police station and then the police would look into the matter. On being reminded that the family has filed a complaint with the Nagaur SP in that regard, the SHO insisted that they should file a complaint at the nearest police station.

Salim Khan, another brother of Razzaq, told the Mooknayak that the victim was treated inhumanely by his teachers. “He used to be unnecessarily scolded in front of all his classmates. The teachers would make him stand out of the classroom. Slurs were hurled at him targeting his religious identity.”

He said that the teachers used to tell Razzaq: “What will you do after your studies? You are a Muslim. You will become a terrorist,” said Salim.

Razzaq was a bright student. He secured 86% marks in Class XII. He wanted to become a teacher. On 31 January, his body was found at the railway track under the jurisdiction of Ladnu police station in Nagaur. The police also found a suicide note in his pocket wherein he had detailed his ordeal.

In the complaint, school teachers Dhanram Prajapat, Shashi Sarma and Ranjit Bhinchar were named. They were booked under Section 306 of the IPC.

According to this section, If any person commits suicide, whoever abets the commission of such suicide, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term that may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to a monetary fine.

The FIR said that a week before his death, Razzaq had complained to the family that he was being harassed at the school due to his religious identity. He was also beaten up several times and threw him out of school. When his brother Rustam went to school to talk about the issue, he was also misbehaved by the accused teachers and others. Despite his mistreatment, Rustam asked Razzaq to go to school. When he went to school again he found that his name was cut off from the class.

Following the registration of the FIR, the District Education Officer has suspended four teachers – Prajapat, Sharma, Bhinchar and Sunita Sharma. However, some people extended their support to the accused and even held a protest against their suspension. The suspensions stand cancelled as of now.
