JAIPUR: Just two days after the Supreme Court of India asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take instructions on a petition filed by Rajasthan hate crime victim Mohammad Afrazul’s wife seeking an impartial probe by a Special Investigation Team, killer Shambhulal Regar has made and released his two new hate videos, that too from inside the Jodhpur jail.
In the new videos too, media reports say, he continues his rant against Islam and also says he has no regret about his actions (hacking and burning Afrazul).
West Bengal laborer Afrazul, 50, was killed by Regar on December 6, 2017. He had got his brutal act recorded on mobile and uploaded it on social media. He was later arrested and has since been lodged in the Jodhpur Central Jail.
While leaving Afrazul’s half-dead body behind, Shambhu had come close to camera and made this hateful comment in Hindi: “Jihadis, this is what your condition is going to be, you spread this love jihad in our country, if you do this in our country, this will the fate of each of you Jihadi. End Jihad … (while striking another blow on the already dead body from his axe) or else this will be the end of each of you Jihadi.”).
“The two new videos in circulation have Regar repeat his rant against “jihadis” inside what appears to be his jail cell. Wearing a hoodie, he speaks into a cellphone and reads out from a long, hate-filled statement asking Hindus to unite against Jihadis. In one of the videos, he alleges a threat to his life,” says NDTV.
After the gruesome act, the local police had interrogated him and the girl for who he had done that crime and disclosed that he was in illegitimate relationship with the girl. The investigation by the local police found the killer was allegedly in illicit relationship with a Hindu girl of the locality. The girl had allegedly eloped with a Muslim laborer, not Afrazul, from Bengal working in the area. Shambhu had brought back the girl from Bengal after telling her parents but did not return her to them and kept her at a rented flat and exploited her. The police said he decided to kill any Muslim to hide his relationship, word about which was spreading in the locality.
However, in the new videos, he has denied the charge.
“I couldn’t bear threats to Hindu women. I have ruined my life and I don’t regret it. But I am sad about the fact that the law and the media showed illicit relationship with her and me,” he says.
After the killing, Gulbahar Bibi, wife of Afrazul, had moved the apex court seeking an SIT to probe the brutal killing of her husband, proper compensation and removal of the video from the Internet.
After hearing the plea, a two Judge Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar on Friday (Feb 16) directed the CBI lawyer to take instruction on her petition.
“Let a copy of this petition be served on Mr. P.K. Dey, learned counsel who ordinarily appears for the Central Bureau of Investigation,” ordered the bench and fixed April 2 for the next hearing.
Appearing for Gulbahar, Senior Advocate Indira Jaising and Advocate Fuzail Ayyubi also sought the transfer of the case from Rajasthan to West Bengal. However, the apex court said the prayer can be considered if at a later stage the petitioner is not satisfied with the investigation.
Probing How He Got Access to Mobile in Jail: Jail Official
Vikram Singh, superintendent of Jodhpur central jail has told The Indian Express that the mobile phone used to film the video hasn’t been recovered and the officials are trying to find out how he got access to the mobile.
He added that preliminary investigation suggests the videos could have been filmed from a bathroom in the jail.
“Regar is currently being kept at a separate barrack. He did come to meet me a few days ago and said that he wanted to go to the general barrack. We are trying to find out that how he managed to get access to the phone and filmed the videos,” said Singh.
