JAIPUR – Days after three school teachers were suspended in Rajasthan’s Kota district over allegations of conversion, reports of the suspension of Madan Dilawar, a Dalit teacher in Ajmer, have come to light.

Dilawar’s suspension on Tuesday has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability. The incident has once again brought the issue of caste-based discrimination to the forefront of public discourse.

Dilawar’s suspension is based on a complaint lodged by the school’s principal, Hemlata Bairwa, accusing him of misconduct and neglect of duty. However, Dilawar asserts that the allegations against him are baseless and motivated by caste prejudice, citing instances of harassment and discrimination he faced at the hands of his colleagues.

In response to the controversy, various Dalit rights organisations and activists have rallied behind Dilawar, demanding a thorough investigation into the matter and urging authorities to address the underlying issues of caste discrimination within the education system. Dr. Kiran Kumar, a prominent social activist, said: “The suspension of Madan Dilawar underscores the entrenched caste biases that continue to plague our institutions. It is imperative that we confront these prejudices head-on and work towards creating an inclusive and equitable environment for all.”

Dilawar’s case highlights the pervasive nature of caste-based discrimination in Indian society, particularly within the realms of education and employment. Despite legal protections and affirmative action measures aimed at promoting social justice, instances of caste prejudice and discrimination persist, often resulting in the marginalisation and victimisation of Dalit individuals.

Experts point to the need for systemic reforms and awareness campaigns to address deep-rooted prejudices and biases that perpetuate caste-based discrimination. Prof. Meena Singh, a scholar specialising in social justice issues, said: “The case of Madan

Dilawar underscores the urgent need for sensitisation programs and diversity training within educational institutions to combat caste discrimination and promote inclusive practices.”

In the case of suspension of teachers in Kota, a cloud of confusion looms over the controversy, with conflicting narratives emerging from the affected parties.

Mirza Mujahid, one of the suspended teachers from Khajuri Odpur government school in Sangod block, asserted that the entire issue is a case of mistaken identity. He clarified that the contentious issue arose due to confusion regarding students with identical names, leading to an erroneous alteration in the religion column of one student’s records. He emphasised that this was merely a human error, not a deliberate act of religious conversion.

As the controversy surrounding Dilawar’s suspension continues to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of the long-standing challenges faced by marginalised communities in their quest for equality and dignity. It also highlights the imperative for concerted action by authorities, civil society organisations, and the public at large to confront and dismantle the structures of oppression that perpetuate caste-based discrimination.
