Authorities cite suspected trafficking as children placed under protection; the Muslim community calls for careful handling of the case

NEW DELHI — The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has detained 167 children at different railway stations in Madhya Pradesh, raising concerns and questions over documentation, safety, and the handling of minors.

According to officials, the action was taken on 11 April following intelligence inputs that pointed to suspicious movement of children. The children were reportedly travelling for madrasa education and had come from states including Bihar and Maharashtra.

Authorities said that during initial checks, several children were found without proper documents or clear permission from their guardians. This raised suspicion of possible human trafficking, leading to the registration of cases under relevant laws against those involved.

All the children are currently under the care of child protection teams. Officials confirmed that counselling sessions are being conducted to understand the circumstances under which the children were travelling.

An official said, “Our priority is the safety of the children. We are verifying their identities and contacting their families. No conclusion will be drawn until the full investigation is complete.”

Some of the children reportedly told officials that they were travelling for religious education. However, the absence of clear documents and details about the institutions they were heading to has deepened concerns among authorities.

At the same time, members of the Muslim community have urged officials to handle the matter with care and sensitivity. A community representative said, “If children are going for education, it should not be treated as a crime. At the same time, if there are lapses, they should be checked properly without creating fear.”

Another local voice added, “Children must be protected first. If there is any wrongdoing, action should be taken against those responsible, but innocent students should not suffer.”

Sources have also mentioned the name of a person identified as Saddam, who is said to have been involved in arranging the movement of the children. He reportedly claimed that the children were being shifted from Bihar to another location, though police said these claims are still under verification.

Officials stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that every angle, including trafficking, is being examined carefully. “We are looking at all possibilities. If any illegal activity is confirmed, strict action will be taken,” an official said.

The administration has also assured that efforts are being made to ensure that children do not face unnecessary hardship and that they are safely reunited with their families after verification.

The incident has highlighted the need for proper documentation and transparent systems when children travel for education, while also raising concerns about how such cases are handled, especially when they involve vulnerable groups.
