NEW DELHI — Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for dismissing the question on Gautam Adani indictment issue in the US.

PM Modi, who was on a visit to the US, dismissed the question on whether he held discussions on Gautam Adani indictment issue with President Donald Trump.

Rahul Gandhi said that the PM was “shielding” his “friend” by calling a “personal matter”. “Silence on questions at home, ‘personal matter’ abroad! Even in the US, Modi Ji shielded Adani Ji from corruption allegations!” he Congress leader said in a post on X.

For Modi Ji, filling a friend’s pockets is ‘nation-building,’ while bribery and the looting of national assets conveniently become a ‘personal matter,’” he added.

n a joint press briefing with US President Donald Trump, PM Modi said such “personal matters” were not discussed during their bilateral meeting.

“India is a democracy and our culture is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, we consider the whole world as one family. I believe every Indian is mine. And when it comes to such personal matters, two leaders of two countries will not get together on the topic and discuss anything on an individual matter,” the Prime Minister said.

Maintaining silence over Adani issue by PM Modi in Us sparked condemnation from the Opposition with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha saying the Prime Minister “covered up Adani’s corruption” even in America.

“In the country, asking questions is met with silence. In abroad, it’s deemed a personal matter! Even in America, Modi covered up Adani’s corruption! When filling friend’s pockets is ‘nation-building’ for Modi, then bribery and looting the nation’s wealth becomes a ‘personal matter’,” the Congress MP said, according to media reports.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale also weighed in, saying the Prime Minister appeared “angry and flustered” when the question on Adani was asked by a journalist.

In an X message Saket Gokhale said, “PM Modi is forced to do a press conference in the US – something he hasn’t done in India in 11 years. This is why he never takes press questions in India. This is why his ‘interviews’ in India are fully scripted. He is so angry and flustered.”

The opposition has repeatedly alleged a nexus between PM Modi and Adani and sought a parliamentary committee probe into the industrialist’s business dealings.

The Adani Group, led by billionaire Gautam Adani, has faced allegations of stock manipulation and financial misconduct, leading to calls for a deeper investigation. The opposition has repeatedly linked Modi’s government to the conglomerate, claiming undue favoritism.
