NEW DELHI — Since Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body, meeting held on Saturday in New Delhi after the party’s debacle in the Lok Sabha election, speculations found space in the media that Congress president Rahul Gandhi is ‘adamant’ to resign as party president.

After the humiliating defeat in the recently concluded election for the Lok Sabha, in which Congress could secure only 52 seats, its second worst defeat in the 134-year old party’s history, Rahul Gandhi offered to resign from Congress presidentship owning moral responsibility for party’s debacle. Party leaders, however, rejected Rahul’s offer.

Congress leaders might have put an end to the controversy regarding Rahul’s resignation offer, putting all faith on his leadership, speculations are getting stronger in the media the Rahul is not going to withdraw its decision.

The Telegraph writes: The Congress leadership is grappling with the distinct possibility of Rahul Gandhi refusing to withdraw his resignation offer, and the dominant view is that he won’t change his mind no matter how intense the pressure.

According to the report, Rahul had categorically asked the CWC, the party’s highest decision-making body, to select a new party chief. He specified that the new president should be from outside his family, ruling out the possibility of Sonia Gandhi or his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stepping in. The party may now be headed by somebody else even if Rahul’s supremacy is unchallenged in the Congress despite successive defeats.

“We know Rahulji rarely indulges in loose talk; he is a man of firm convictions. If he has offered to resign, he would have thought about it and made up his mind. I personally don’t see any possibility of him giving in to party pressure. We have known him since he was the Youth Congress-in-charge. He sticks to his decisions,” the Telegraph quoted one young Congress leader as saying.

“The party need not always be headed by the Nehru-Gandhi family. There has to be division of labour. Organisational needs and a political campaign are different issues. I’m going to do intense political campaigning. Let somebody else handle the organisation,”  Rahul Gandhi said according to party leader.

Rahul is also quoted in the media as saying in the CWC: “I am not going anywhere; I am going to fight harder. If you believe in my leadership, I don’t need any post to prove myself.”

Meanwhile, in the wake of speculation that Rahul Gandhi was adamant on stepping down as Congress chief, Congress media in-charge Randeep Surjewala on Monday urged the media to respect the sanctity of the closed-door meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and desist from falling into the ‘trap of conjectures’.

“Congress expects everyone, including the media, to respect the sanctity of a closed-door meeting of the CWC. Various conjectures, speculations, insinuations, assumptions, gossip and rumour mongering in a section of the media is uncalled for and unwarranted,” Surjewala said.
