Pulwama Attack Accused Bilal Kuchay Dies of Heart Attack in Jammu Hospital

JAMMU – An accused in the Pulwama terror attack, 32-year-old Bilal Ahmad Kuchey, died of a heart attack at the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital here late on Monday. Kuchay, son of Ghulam Nabi Kuchay from Pulwama, was incarcerated in a Jammu division jail and had been unwell for about a week before his death.

Kuchey of Kakapora’s Hajibal village was among 19 people formally charged in the case of the deadly suicide attack on a CRPF convoy in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district five years ago. Forty CRPF personnel were killed and eight more injured in the suicide attack on a convoy in Pulwama’s Lethpora on February 14, 2019.

According to officials, Kuchey received treatment in jail before being transferred to GMC Jammu. His brother, Muzaffar Kuchay, confirmed that he was undergoing medical treatment when he passed away.

Kuchay was arrested in 2020 for allegedly providing logistical support to militants involved in the suicide attack.

Kuchey and 18 other accused in the case were charge-sheeted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on August 25, 2020. He was among the seven accused arrested in the case.

He and the other accused Shakir Bashir, Insha Jan and Peer Tariq Ahmad Shah had provided logistics and harboured the attackers in their homes.

The charge sheet was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Foreigners Act and the J&K Public Property (Prevention of Damages) Act.
