Clarion India

AHMEDABAD — Some Muslim men, arrested for allegedly throwing stones at a Navratri Garba event, were tied to a pole and flogged with canes by police personnel in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat’s Kheda district in full public view.

Video footage of the incident viral on Twitter shows crowds were cheering as officers watched plainclothes cops hit the men. Local news outlet VTV Gujarati News also shared the video and said “10-11 heretics were brought to the village, where the police taught them a lesson in public” in Undhela village.

According to the report, the accused were asked to “apologise to the public”, in the presence of the police inspector in charge of the area.

The public flogging without any investigation to ascertain the involvement of the accused has crossed the limits of barbarity that too by Police personnel. This has come as a new low of morality, law and order in India.

In response to the video people have questioned the police’s “kangaroo justice.”

According to a PTI report, a mob of Muslim youth allegedly threw stones at a garba event on premises of a temple on Monday night.

According to an FIR registered at Matar police station, members from the Muslim community in the village objected to garba being organised near a mosque, which is located across the temple. 13 persons were detained, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police VR Bajpai.

“The village sarpanch (head) had organised garba at a temple. A mob from the Muslim community tried to stop it from taking place,” Police sources said.

Police were deployed in large number at the village following the incident.
