#ProphetofCompassion Trends on Internet to Counter Islamophobes

NEW DELHI — Following the murder of Kamlesh Tiwari, a leader of a little-known rightwing outfit Bharat Hindu Army, in Lucknow, the capital of UP, on Friday, people with Islamophobic bent of mind took to Internet and started making derogatory comments about the holy Prophet (PBUH).

Tiwari had made defamatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in 2015 and authorities say that they don’t rule out that being the reason for his murder as revenge. In fact, the police have arrested six Muslim men in this connection from different cities of the country.

However, Muslim activists, secular and liberal voices among non-Muslims, saw this as an opportunity to dispel misconceptions and fallacies being peddled about the prophet.

On Saturday, a hashtag #prophetofcompassion became a trend on twitter in India.

Social media users on twitter brought up stories of the Prophet (PBUH) which highlight compassion, love, equality and justice. The hashtag saw thousands of tweets put out under it to educate people about Prophet (PBUH) in particular and Islam in general.

People posted graphics of quotes of famous non-Muslim thinkers, writer, and philosophers about prophet (PBUH). It included Michael Heart, Leo Tolstoy and George Bernard Shaw.
