MUMBAI – Progress has finally been made in the allocation of cemetery plots in the Mumbai suburb of Deonar. The issue was left hanging even after the Bombay High Court had on December 10 last granted a 15-day respite to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to allocate the land for the purpose.
Despite the court’s clear directive that the allotted time was more than sufficient, progress was achieved only after the lapse of the stipulated two-month period. During this time, the BMC demolished the remaining two structures in the transit camp, while the SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) filed an affidavit affirming the issuance of a notice to the developer for clearing encroachments from another plot.
The high court had questioned the BMC about the timeframe for sending a proposal to the state government regarding the allocation of land for the cemetery. The BMC’s lawyer indicated the construction of six chalis under the transit camp, with four already demolished and two pending. The court, unsatisfied with the proposed 15-day deadline, sternly refused to grant additional time.
Advocate General Birendra Saraf assured the court that the state government would initiate the land transfer process promptly upon receiving the BMC’s proposal. Following this assurance, the BMC submitted a proposal to the state government, which has been accepted, as confirmed by advocate Shamsher Sheikh.
Sheikh emphasised the issuance of a notification by the state government, expressing hope that the cemetery plots would soon be transferred to Deonar, providing a permanent solution to the burial issues.
The case is set for next hearing on January 22. It is anticipated that the progress made thus far will be presented, and agencies involved will strive to demonstrate accelerated efforts. Despite earlier obstacles and attempts to impede progress, the collective efforts have brought the matter to its current stage, underscoring the commitment to overcoming challenges. The community has also been informed of these efforts, encouraging collective participation in resolving the longstanding issue.
