ALIGARH  – Miffed over appalling conditions in their institution, over a dozen girl students of Government High School in Raiatpur in Iglas town of Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh, have penned an open letter to the district magistrate. The missive not only outlines the absence of basic facilities on the premises but also appeals for an impartial inquiry into the functioning of the school management.

According to The Mooknayak, an online news website focused on social justice for the Dalit minority and marginalised people, the open letter draws the attention of the authorities at the lack of essential amenities in the school. “We have nothing except desks and chairs,” the letter said.

In contrast, it said, other schools in the vicinity boast of better facilities, accentuating the disparity. The young activists believe that with proper resources, they could well excel academically.

The Mooknayak said its attempts to contact the district magistrate and the Basic Education officer of Aligarh for comments elicited no response.

The students expressed frustration over the whole issue. They claimed that the school lacks infrastructure beyond furniture, with not even a blackboard.

They also alleged that the principal visits the school only once a week for a few hours, neglecting academic responsibilities.

The letter further highlighted the absence of sanitation and clean drinking water, forcing students to fetch water from a nearby junior school.

The students concluded their letter by urging a thorough investigation into the utilisation of the school’s budgetary allocation.
