NEW DELHI — A crowd of people in support of the CAA, holding tricolor flags and chanting in unison — “Desh ke gaddaro, goli maro…” (shoot the traitors of the nation), Bharat mata ki jai, (hail mother India), CAA ke samman men yuva hain maidan me, (In the honour of CAA, youth are in field) — took out a march towards the Jamia Millia Islamia Campus on Tuesday afternoon.
The police were unable to block their way at the Sukhdev Vihar checkpoint, and the marchers headed for the protest site. One of the CAA supporters told Caravan Daily they were headed for Shaheen Bagh, the main scene of anti-CAA protests, and “show them that we are in support of law and the government.”
The “people are with the government and CAA”, said Joginder, one of the CAA supporters in the rally. He was puzzled when asked about the necessity of holding a support rally and left the conversation after saying the rally was coming from Chirag Dilli.
As the video of this march surfaced, some anti-CAA protesters gathered at the beginning of the Jamia campus to confront them. They said this was a clear case of negligence on the part of the police. “It raises a question mark on the police department. How could they reach till this point,” asked Hammad, a student of history in Jamia.
Anti-CAA protesters said they were worried something bad could happen. Gunshots in Jamia and near Shaheen Bagh had given them a strong reason to be concerned. “Supporters of the law might heckle with the protesters and it will later be painted as a communal fight, to gain political benefits for the BJP in the Delhi Assembly polls.”
Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh are the two focal points of protest in the capital against the contentious law. The BJP has tried to make Shaheen Bagh as the main campaign theme for the assembly polls. Three of its leaders and star campaigners delivered hate speeches. Consequently, three incidents of gunfire took place at both the protest sites, leaving one injured.
The slogans raised by the CAA supporters were provocative. The protesters did not react. “It is their conspiracy to provoke us but students of Jamia are showing the true spirit by adopting only the democratic means of dissent,” said Hammad.
