NELLORE – A Muslim girl, Misbah Fatima, committed suicide a few days ago. A brilliant student of Brahmarshi High School in Palamaner of Chittoor, Misbah was expected to appear for Class X boards next month. She was found hanging from the ceiling at her residence.

Misbah’s parents squarely blamed the principal of her school, Ramesh, for the tragedy. Ramesh had issued her a transfer certificate just a month before the board exams. They contended that if she had not meted out with such a raw deal by him, their daughter would not have taken the extreme step.

Ramesh was suspended soon after news of Misbah’s death came in. he was later arrested on Friday under sections 306, 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

The principal was also working as an assistant at a ZP high school.

The incident took a political turn after a four-page suicide note was recovered from the deceased student. In the note, she explained how she was harassed by the principal. She also alleged that the school management was under pressure from the father of one of her classmates, Sunilwho, a leader of ruling YSR Congress Party, to expel her.

Misbah concluded by apologising to her parents, Nazir Ahmed and Naseema, for taking the extreme step. The note sparked an outrage in the state instantaneously.

Misbah’s parents, who are daily wagers, held a protest against the principal and management of the Brahmarshi High School outside the DSP office on Thursday.

Giving a detailed account of how the school management involved in abetment of suicide, her parents claimed that Misbah, being a promising student, stood better chances of becoming a school topper as against her classmate Poojitha. This was the reason her father, Sunil, wanted her to be removed from the school to clear the way of his own daughter to the top position.

Haseena, elder sister of Misbah, told the media that the police were going slow in this case under the influence of Sunil. She alleged that some policemen had barged into her house at 2 am on the pretext of inspecting the crime scene. They forced the family out of her room and took away all her sister’s belongings.

Opposition leaders, N Amarnath Reddy and N.Lokesh Babu, demanded action against Ramesh and Sunil. Various minority groups expressed their solidarity with the family of Misbah.
