Police in UP’s Kannauj Examine 171 Sites to Enforce Noise Control Rules

Date:

During a special three-day campaign, 31 loudspeakers were removed and decibel levels of 54 others

KANNAUJ – Authorities in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj District carried out a major operation against loudspeakers in the district, removing 31 and reducing the sound of 54 others to the prescribed decibel limits during a special three-day campaign. The action forms part of a wider effort by administrations across Uttar Pradesh to enforce noise regulations at religious and public places.

The initiative in Kannauj mirrors actions previously taken in other districts such as Firozabad, Muzaffarnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Azamgarh, where police removed loudspeakers from religious sites and conducted awareness campaigns.

The campaign in Kannauj was conducted under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar, who instructed police teams at every station to inspect loudspeakers and sound systems at 171 religious and public locations. During the inspection, 85 loudspeakers were found to be non-compliant with the prescribed standards. While 54 were adjusted to meet legal limits, 31 were removed entirely and later distributed to local schools and colleges for educational use.

Superintendent Vinod Kumar said, “It is our duty to ensure that noise levels are within the legal limits. Loudspeakers must be used responsibly, whether for religious, social, or personal events.” He added, “We are also raising awareness among the public so that everyone understands the importance of following the Noise Pollution Act.”

Local police officers explained that loudspeaker noise has become a growing concern in Kannauj. “People often use loudspeakers at religious places without considering the impact on neighbours,” said Circle Officer Ramesh Singh. “We conducted this campaign to remind the community that legal limits exist for a reason, and violations can lead to serious consequences.”

Efforts to control loudspeaker noise are not new in Kannauj. Approximately two years ago, a similar district-wide campaign was conducted, but the practice of overusing loudspeakers persisted. “Despite earlier efforts, it was clear that stricter measures were needed,” said SP Kumar. “We hope that by removing non-compliant loudspeakers and educating the public, we can create a quieter and more peaceful environment.”

Residents expressed support for the initiative. “It is difficult to live near loudspeakers that blare all day,” said local resident Farida Begum. “We welcome the police action and hope it continues.”

Officials emphasised that maintaining noise within prescribed limits is not just a legal requirement but a social responsibility. They urged religious leaders and the public to cooperate fully with authorities. “Respect for neighbours and community harmony is as important as religious observances,” noted SP Kumar.

With this operation, Kannauj authorities aim to enforce compliance, educate the public, and reduce noise pollution, reinforcing a model that may be followed across other districts of Uttar Pradesh.
