NEW DELHI – Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind’s general secretary Maulana Hakeemuddin Qasmi called out police atrocities during nationwide protests against BJP leaders’ derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad. He said it is the inability of the police to control the situation that added fuel to the fire.

The Maulana reiterated his organization’s stand that Jamiat won’t tolerate insult to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at any cost. To protest against such blasphemy, he said is a democratic right of Muslims and justice-loving citizens of the country.
He said denial of these rights and suppression of dissent by indiscriminate arrests, police firing and the use of bulldozers is a disgrace to any democratic government. The governments should realise that the protesters are the citizens of the country, and hence can’t be treated as enemies.

However, he had a word of caution for the protesters when he said mischievous elements infiltrate such demonstrations who need to be kept at bay. He made an appeal to the youth to beware of such elements and adopt a peaceful approach to resolving issues.

The Jamiat leader further said that efforts were being made at all levels to provide legal help to those arrested. A Jamiat delegation had earlier toured Kanpur and reviewed the situation there. They are planning to visit other places soon.

While expressing his concern over the death of Mudassar and Sahil, the two youths who were shot dead during a demonstration in Ranchi, he demanded that the Jharkhand government should conduct a judicial inquiry into the matter and provide reasonable compensation to the family of the deceased.
