Owaisi Party Eyes Alliance with Bihar Mahagathbandhan to Defeat NDA

NEW DELHI – The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has said that his party has approached the Mahagathbandhan leaders for an alliance to defeat the BJP-led NDA in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.

Owaisi stated that the primary objective of seeking an alliance is to prevent the NDA from retaining power in the state.

AIMIM’s Bihar unit chief Akhtarul Iman has contacted Mahagathbandhan leaders, which includes the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and expressed willingness to collaborate against the BJP and its allies, media reports said on Monday.

“Our State President, Akhtarul Iman, has spoken to some leaders in the Mahagathbandhan, and he has categorically stated that we do not want the BJP or NDA to retain power in Bihar. Now it is up to these political parties that want to prevent the NDA from returning to power in Bihar,” Owaisi told the news agency ANI.

He emphasised that AIMIM is considering contesting the elections in alliance with the Mahagathbandhan to maximise opposition strength against the BJP and NDA.

The AIMIM chief earlier wrote to the Election Commission of India opposing the “Special Intensive Revision” of electoral rolls in Bihar.

Taking to social media, Owaisi claimed on X, “It is a legally questionable exercise that will leave genuine voters without a voice in the forthcoming elections.”

He criticised the process, arguing that the requirement for documents such as birth certificates, residence proofs, and parental residence certificates would disproportionately affect the poor, especially those displaced by floods in regions like Seemanchal.

Owaisi warned that these stringent requirements could disenfranchise thousands of impoverished families, denying them their constitutional right to vote.

In another post on X, AIMIM chief exhorted: “If you want to remove BJP and its allies from power, you have to accept Akhtarul Iman’s suggestion and offer of an alliance.”

“If they (Mahagathbandhan) are not ready, I am ready to contest everywhere…Wait for the time to come. It is too early to announce the exact number,” Owaisi is reported to have told the news agency on Sunday.
