NEW DELHI – Amidst the controversy surrounding the proposed demolition of South Delhi’s Sunehri Masjid, All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has expressed concerns over the country’s religious landscape.
Addressing a rally here on Monday, the AIMIM supremo emphasised the historical significance of the place of worship for Muslims. “We have lost the place where we worshipped for 500 years (Babri Masjid in Ayodhya). You can see what’s happening there now,” he said referring to the planned consecration ceremony of Ram Temple built on the ruins of the mosque established in 1527.
He cautioned against forces aiming to disrupt the unity of the country.
Highlighting the importance of unity, Owaisi urged the gathering to maintain their strength and encouraged the youth to actively participate in preserving their mosques. He said: “Young people, maintain your milli hammiyyat (community concern) and strength and keep the mosques populated, otherwise our mosques will be taken away from us.”
Touching on the contentious issue of Sunehri Masjid, Owaisi sought public opinion on the New Delhi Municipal Council’s proposal to remove it. He argued that such actions violate constitutional rights, specifically pointing to Article 25 which guarantees freedom of religion as a fundamental right.
Owaisi questioned the purpose behind the mosque’s proposed removal, citing concerns over the protection of the country’s culture and heritage, invoking Article 29. He raised questions about the perceived bias against Muslims, wondering why the BJP and the Narendra Modi-led government harbor so much animosity towards mosques and the sounds emanating from them.
