NEW DELHI — The chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW), Rekha Sharma, deleted a number of her tweets and locked her profile after users dug out some of her old tweets in which she was found mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and making anti-women jokes.

She came under public scrutiny on Tuesday evening when a tweet was put out from the official handle of NCW saying that the chairperson discussed “women’s safety” and “love jihad” in her meeting with the Maharashtra Governor.

Netizens asked how a public official can give credence to the right-wing bogey of “love jihad” when it has not been defined even by the law.

Some Twitter users ran archival search on her personal profile popping up Tweets dating back to 2012 and 2014 in which she had made fun of women and lampooned politicians, including Modi,  Sonia Gandhi, Priyanaka Gandhi  and Arvind Kejriwal.

A tweet from 2012 showed Sharma saying that Modi was “a deaf and mute person whose life revolves around mentally challenged women”.

After these tweets surfaced on social media, people expressed outrage saying she was a woman with an anti-women mindset leading an institution for women.

The women’s wing of the Congress termed her a  “stooge” who was propagating the “misogynist filthy mindset of BJP”

Sharma’s regressive old tweets of the NCW chief have now led to calls for her resignation from the post of NCW chief.

Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Aatshi Marlena asked how woman with a foul, contemptible and anti-feminist mindset can preside over an institution established to protect the rights of women. The party demanded her resignation.

As her old controversial tweets surfaced, Sharma said that her Twitter account had been hacked and she would complain to Twitter and hold the “perpetrators’ ‘ accountable.

She was appointed as chairperson of NCW in 2018. At that time, activists had criticised her appointment saying the commission has been turned into a political parking lot. She has also worked as media in-charge of BJP in Haryana.
