Muslim organisations demand immediate action; authorities vow strict measures to protect communal harmony

NEW DELHI – Tension prevailed in Dehradun in Uttarakhand on Monday night as protests erupted following an offensive comment against Prophet Muhammad on social media. The post, which sparked outrage among the Muslim community, led to large gatherings and street demonstrations in the city.

The incident echoes the ongoing “I Love Muhammad” controversy that has previously caused unrest in other parts of India. “We cannot tolerate disrespect towards our beloved Prophet,” said Ameen Qureshi, a local Muslim community leader. “Our faith and sentiments must be respected, and those who insult it must face the law.”

The comment, made late on Monday, prompted members of several Muslim organisations to gather near the local police station in large numbers. Protesters chanted slogans and demanded the immediate arrest of the person responsible. The crowd reportedly surrounded the Bazaar police post, creating a tense situation.

Police initially attempted to calm the protesters through dialogue, but the crowd remained defiant. “We tried to reason with them, but the situation escalated quickly,” said Inspector Rajesh Kumar of Patel Nagar Police Station. “To prevent further chaos, we had to use lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.”

Authorities confirmed that the accused behind the offensive post has been arrested and is currently in police custody. The arrest, however, further inflamed the crowd before the situation was gradually brought under control. The local police have been directed to maintain strict vigilance across the area.

“The individual posting such comments is being questioned under strict legal provisions,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dehradun. “We have increased security in sensitive areas to prevent any further disturbances.”

The administration has issued a clear warning that any attempt to disturb law and order will be met with firm action. A formal case has been registered against the accused for attempting to disrupt religious harmony and making offensive remarks.

Community leaders expressed concern over repeated incidents of disrespect against Islam. “It is deeply hurtful to see such provocations on social media,” said Dr Farida Khan, a prominent Dehradun resident. “We urge authorities to act swiftly and prevent any repetition of such incidents.”

This event comes after similar unrest in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, where the “I Love Muhammad” protests had led to violent clashes. In that case, influential cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza was arrested for allegedly inciting violence, and 55 individuals involved were jailed. Authorities in Dehradun are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the issue does not escalate in the region.
