NEW DELHI — The demand to rename places across states has gained momentum ever since the Yogi Adityanath-led government renamed Allahabad as Prayagaraj and Faizabad as Ayodhya.

Shiv Sena in Maharashtra on Thursday has stepped up pressure on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to rename two cities, Aurangabad and Osmanabad, according to media reports.

Shiv Sena is the oldest ally of the ruling BJP in Maharashtra.

Shiv Sena lawmaker Sanjay Raut posted on the Twitter: “Yogi Adityanath has renamed Allahabad and Faizabad to Pragyaraj and Ayodhya. When will CM Devendra Fadnavis rename Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv Nagar?”

Earlier, taking a cue from the UP government, the Gujarat government led by Vijay Rupani has expressed its interest in renaming Ahmedabad as Karnavati.

The spree to change the names of the cities having any similarity with Muslim names and history led by saffron clad Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath is nothing short of an effort to vitiate communal atmosphere and to polarise people on religious basis.

The ruling BJP party and its saffron patrons are inclined to accelerate the Hinduta agenda, whether it be Ram Temple or renaming the cities having Muslim touch, just to exploit the religious sentiments of the people to amass support for the forthcoming assembly elections in the states and general elections in 2018 as there remains no other agenda since they failed to deliver good governance.
