NEW DELHI – Amid raging nationwide protests against the Controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Over 50 student organizations has decided to take mass pledge to defend the constitution in their new year resolution protesting against the controversial issues like nationwide NRC, NPR and the CAA. On 1st January, Jamia Coordination Committee is organizing their separate event at their protest site in which well-known artists Sawra Bhashkar, Zeeshan Ayyub and Sanjay Rajoura are set to take part.
The call to take mass pledge, which will be taken at the iconic India gate at 2 Pm on 1st January, has been given by the recently formed National Young India Coordination Committee (YICC). They have announced that around 100 universities will participate in the mass pledge event.
“In the face of the grave threat of CAA-NRC thrust by the Modi regime, the Young India forum will actively take part in the anti-CAA/NRC movement in the country. We will observe the first day of the New Year as a beginning of a year of struggles for rights and dignity of the people of this country. We will observe the day with the slogan: ‘New Year’s Resolution – Defend Constitution,” they said in their press statement.
They also have given an ultimatum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to repeal the controversial citizenship law which discriminates on the basis of religion against Muslims.
“Young India Gives Modi-Shah Government an Ultimatum! All India CAA-NPR-NRC should be revoked by 26th January 2020 Republic day when we celebrate our Constitution,” they said.
Arguing against the CAA, nationwide NRC and NPR, they said “we believe CAA is anti-Muslim and is thus communal and divisive. An All India NRC will disenfranchise crores of Indians, including Muslims and India’s poor and underprivileged. Their citizenship rights will be snatched away. It will throw the poor and the marginalised from all communities into an abyss of sheer insecurity devoid of rights. And as a first step to NRC, the central government has brought in the National Population Register (NPR). The NPR is not a simple population-counting exercise; it is the first step towards declaring citizens as ‘doubtful’ or illegal citizens”.
The statement has been issued by Left student leaders N Sai Balaji, Kawalpreet Kaur and Aijaz Choudhry.
