NEW DELHI – Ever since the Supreme Court initiated contempt proceedings against senior advocate-activist Prashant Bhushan for his tweets criticising the judiciary, he has been receiving massive support from various corners, especially on social media.

Netizens had earlier launched a campaign in his support on Twitter when the contempt notices were issued to Bhushan. Now on Thursday when the apex court was conducting the hearing to decide the sentence after holding him guilty in the case of contempt of the court, Bhushan has won praise for refusing to apologise for his tweets.

Bhushan filed a very bold statement in the apex court on his conviction in the case telling the court that the tweets were his bonafide belief and it would be insincere and contemptuous on his part to apologise for those tweets. He cited Mahatma Gandhi for refusing to seek mercy.

This bold statement on his conviction has drawn a lot of applause on Twitter. Netizens trended the hashtag #HumDekhenge (A phrase from prominent Pakistani Urdu poet Ahmed Faraz’s poem ‘Lazim hai hum dekhenge’.

Tweeting in his support, senior journalist Arefa Khanum Sherwani said, “One man @pbhushan1 has resurrected the dignity of every Indian citizen. His steel spine has given courage to a generation of Indians to stand up for their rights and liberties. Long live Indian citizen! Long live Indian democracy!”

News website Live Law’s managing editor Manu Sebastian said “You may disagree with #PrashantBhushan’s politics or dislike his activism. But it’s hard to disagree – that this man today showed what it means to have courage & strength of conscience. A rare sight these days, where most people just bend down before power. Truly inspiring sight.”

However, Bhushan also faced criticism as he supported the contempt-of-court case against the then Supreme Court judge Justice C.S Karnan, who belongs to the Dalit community.

“#PrashantBhushan finds many friends among the ruling elites. Not only because he is one of them, but also because he is a man of the system. Justice Karnan is an outsider and he found no friends among the elites and opinion makers,” tweeted The Print Hindi editor Dilip C Mandal.

Later, Bhushan issued a clarification regarding his stand about Justice Karnan.
