NEW DELHI – A couple of days after the release of ‘UPSC Jihad’ program’s trailer by Hindu extremist right-wing Sudarshan News Channel, Twitterati took to social media to call for a boycott of dairy cooperative Amul, one of the sponsors for a show on the channel.

The hashtag #BoycottAmul started trending after the report published by a web media watchdog Newslaundry. The report gives a detailed account of the sponsors of the channel and posed a few questions.

Using memes like “Amul Presents Waste of India”, “Utterly, Butterly Islamophobic” and “Islamophobic Venom Amul Potent Stuff”, netizens expressed their rage over Amul for its support to the channel.

Terming Muslims “intruders” into the bureaucracy, a Sudarshan News promo had questioned how members of the minority community are clearing the prestigious civil services exam in large numbers. He referred to students of Jamia’s Residential Coaching Academy as “Jihadis of Jamia” and created the hashtag UPSC_Jihad.

Calling the Sudarshan Channel promo an anti-India act, an avid user of social media application Twitter said, “We Indians value secularism and respect each other’s religion. Those who go against our Constitution and spread hatred are anti-India and should be boycotted. Those who support them financially should be boycotted as well. #BoycottAmul”.

A professor of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, Sweden, said that Amul was promoting an accused rapist bigot’s hate-mongering against India’s minorities every evening! #BoycottAmul.

Tagging Amul, another netizen appealed to Muslims to boycott the products of the dairy. “Terrorist media like Sudarshan TV, whose job is to spread hatred against a particular community throughout the day are also responsible for promoting such hate media to those who are helping them financially. @Amul_Coop is also one of them. Muslims should boycott it”, the tweet reads.

“Time to boycott @Amul_Coop. Its  support for Islamophobia is nauseating! The brand is well within its right to sponsor bloodthirsty TV channels. We too are free to boycott Amul. What a fall from grace!  #BoycottAmul”, tweeted journalist Rifat Jawaid.

The hashtag #BoycottAmul remained trending all day. A batch of right-wingers came criticising the boycott call, dubbing it ‘anti-national’ and ‘Islamists.’ The TEDx speaker Sanjukta Basu reminded them about the previous stand of Bharatiya Janata Party on Verghese Kurien. She tweeted, “After saying nothing happened in 70 years, after attacking Verghese Kurien saying he diverted funds to Christian missionaries, BJP is trending #IndiaLovesAmul because liberals are requesting Amul to withdraw ads from hate channels or #BoycottAmul.”
