NEW DELHI —Hindutva protagonist and rabid anti-Muslim priest Yati Narsinghanand Giri has been booked for making derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and abusing top police officers of Ghaziabad District in Uttar Pradesh.
According to an FIR lodged in Ghaziabad on Saturday, the infamous priest of the Dasna Devi Temple has been accused of using words in a video to incite religious sentiments, cause criminal intimidation, insult, defame, and disturb public peace. The complainant also alleged that Narsinghanand used abusive language against the Ghaziabad Police Commissioner and the Assistant Police Commissioner of Loni in a video.
In the viral video, Narsinghanand is heard mouthing provocative statements against Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. In a viral video, he can be heard declaring that he does not consider Gandhi the ‘Father of the Nation’ and instead labels him and Nehru as the “biggest traitors in human history.”
Narsinghanand further claimed that due to Gandhi and Nehru, Hindus — who form the majority in India — have no land to call their own.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari said the complaint lodged at the Wave police station on Friday alleged that Narsinghanand’s statements were designed to provoke and disrupt communal harmony. Investigation into the matter was underway, the officer added.
Narsinghanand is known for making derogatory comments about Muslims for which he faced a strong backlash. In December last year, he led a ritual dedicated to ‘Mother Goddes Bagalamukhi’ seeking the “destruction of Islamic Jihadis”.
According to him, the complete annihilation of “Islamic Jihadis” responsible for killing Hindus in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India is essential to safeguard “humanity”.
Last November, he was placed under house arrest by the police, restricting his movement and that of his disciples to prevent any disruption during a conference organised by Muslim cleric Tauqeer Raza.
The conference, addressing the Waqf Board Amendment Bill, was scheduled to take place at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan.
Narsinghanand and his followers started reciting Hindu hymns within the temple premises after they were stopped by the police.
