For over 12 years, a Muslim from Mahajanpeth in Burhanpur has assisted Hindu families with pyre preparation and guidance besides digging graves to bury the Muslims

BURHANPUR – In an inspiring display of communal harmony, Nabu Bhai, a Muslim man from Mahajanpeth in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh, has been selflessly assisting Hindu families with last rites for the past 12 years.

Without accepting any fee, he ensures that every funeral is conducted with dignity and care, standing as a living example of the region’s Ganga-Jamuni cultural spirit. He also digs graves to bury the Muslims.

Speaking about his work, Nabu Bhai said, “I have been serving here for 12 years, and I never take any fee. During the pandemic, when people avoided touching the bodies, I continued performing the cremations. As soon as I hear about a death, I go to the cremation ground. From arranging the wood to completing the cremation, I am there.”

Nabu Bhai lives near the Raja Harishchandra Mukti Dham cremation ground. He recalled, “When a person died and there was no one to help the family, I felt I should step in. I decided to stay near the cremation ground and help whenever required. Since then, I have been assisting with every cremation that takes place here.”

In addition to his service, Nabu Bhai has been involved in digging graves for over three decades. “I studied up to fourth grade. I have been digging graves for the last 30 years. It helps me support my family and also serve the community,” he said.

Local residents have praised Nabu Bhai’s dedication. One neighbour remarked, “He treats every family with respect, regardless of their religion. His service during the pandemic, when no one else dared to help, shows his true humanity.”

Burhanpur, known for its communal harmony, often sees people from different communities living and working together. Nabu Bhai’s 12-year commitment to performing Hindu last rites without charge exemplifies the enduring spirit of unity and selfless service in the district.

His example also sends a message of hope and collaboration. “People like Nabu Bhai remind us that humanity transcends religion,” a local official stated. “He is not just serving individuals; he is serving the values that hold our community together.”

Through his dedication, Nabu Bhai has become a symbol of empathy, courage, and religious harmony, showing that acts of kindness can bridge communities and sustain the Ganga-Jamuni ethos that Madhya Pradesh proudly carries.
