NEW DELHI — The family of Dr Faiyaz Alam, who was found dead in suspicious circumstances in the Boys hostel of Katihar Medical College & Hospital, Bihar on March 20th this year demanding a high level probe into the matter. Dr Alam’s family has been running from pillar to post for justice alleging Police have been soft-pedalling the investigation apparently under the pressure of Dr Ashfaque Karim, Managing Director, of the College and also a Rajya Sabha MP.
Recalling the last call that Dr Alam made to his family, his wailing mother Sitara Begum said at a Press conference here on Saturday: “On March 19th around 10pm Faiyaz called me to tell me ‘Ammi, you don’t know how many enemies are after me.’ When I asked him about them he said you don’t know about them. Then I started weeping and did not call him again thinking he might have slept. Next day around 9am, Faiyaz’s senior named Nihal called me saying that Faiyaz was not well. As I reached there I found my son was lying dead in Emergency Ward of the college.”
“Now I don’t have any reason to live. My son left this world. I have knocked many doors for justice. Nobody from the College management informed us about my son’s death. I had handed over my son to Ashfaque Karim. He has not told us what happened to my son and who killed him. What did my son do? My only son has been killed. I want justice for my son!” she pleaded.
Faiyaz, 31, was pursuing his final year of Post-Graduation in Radiology from Katihar Medical College and Hospital, when on March 20th this year he was reportedly found unconscious in his hostel room, later declared brought dead when he was admitted to the emergency ward of the college. On the written complaint of Amir Omron, maternal uncle of Faiyaz, Police registered a FIR under Section 302 & 34 on same day but no final report has been submitted yet.

The post-mortem report suggested an injury on the forehead and found blood clot on head and neck. The cause of death suggested in the report –“neurogenic shock as a result of head injury”.
Fiyaz who hailed from Gopalganj district in Bihar was the only son of Farooque Alam, 54 an engineer by profession and Sitara Begum, a housewife who till few months back lived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia but had returned back to Gopalganj in February.
Taseer Husain, brother in law of Faiyaz, told the media that they wrote to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar four times, Governor Satyapal Malik two times, Human Rights Commission, besides top police officials of the state but nothing happened in the case yet.
“We want a special investigation team to probe the matter thoroughly” Husain demanded.
Questioning the lacunae in the police investigation so far Husain said, “The basic thing which should have been done is to seal the room where Faiyaz was found dead. Police did not even probe a person named Saif Rehman, who had all belongings of Dr Faiyaz Alam. Despite our complaint to the police, Rehman was not enquired as he is a son of a senior police officer. Police are diverting the case and giving different statements every time. We will accept the police report if it does a proper investigation.”
Family Gets Warning, Legal Notice from MP Ashfaque Karim
On April 24th the Medical College director and Rajya Sabha MP of RJD, Dr Ashfaque Karim served a legal notice to Faiyaz’s family demanding an apology through Inquilab Urdu daily that had published a report about the suspicious death of Dr Faiyaz Alam quoting the allegations of the family. The notice contended that false, derogatory and defamatory allegations were made by Sitara Begum.
Taseer Hussain, the brother in law, said that Ashfaque has intimidated the family and the reporter of Inquilab too.
“What is the meaning of such intimidations? If he had not done anything wrong why is he scared?” Husain demanded.
“Till date the college management has not communicated to us regarding what happened to Faiyaz. Now we fear to even visit Katihar. We also suspect that our phones are being tapped as the sound is distorted whenever we make a call,” he said.
In the press conference AMU Students’ Union president Maskoor Ahmad Usmani said, ” It has been two months but nothing has happened. Ashfaque Karim is worried about his image but he should take responsibility in the matter because a student has been killed in his college. We demand a high level inquiry in this case.”
Nahas Mala, national president of Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) said, “Police is under pressure in this matter, so, has not investigated the case while it is clear that Faiyaz was murdered.”
