NEW DELHI — Two women and three men have been badly injured by Hindutva goons for wearing skullcaps in public in Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh, Urdu daily Rashtriya Sahara has reported.

According to the daily, three youths returning home after offering Maghrib (evening) prayers in a local mosque in Babugarh thana area in Apeda village were stopped and beaten by Hindutva goons. Their caps were removed and trampled over. The goons then entered the houses of Muslims and misbehaved with womenfolk.

Police force immediately rushed to the scene, controlled the situation and sent the victims to hospital for treatment.

An FIR has been registered against four of the villagers. Police claimed to have arrested three of the accused.

The Muslims have called upon the Superintendent of Police and demanded protection. He has promised strict action against the perpetrators.

According to the paper, three cousins, Saqib, Sameer and Suhail, were returning from the mosque when Ankush, s/o Yetendar; Guddu, s/o Pappu; Prince, s/o Giani; and Saneed, s/o Anil Tyagi asked them to remove their skullcaps. Upon refusing to comply with the demand Ankush called other Hindutva goons. In order to save their lives when the victims ran from the scene they were chased to their homes but the goons entered their houses and injured Rehana, Sana and Muskan. When a family member, Saleem, tried to protect the women he too was beaten with batons.

Alarmed by the commotion when other villagers arrived at the scene, perpetrators fled from there warning the villagers to vacate the village.

Despite the assurances of UP’s newly appointed Chief Minister Yogi Aditiyanath of representing everyone without any discrimination on any ground, several incidents have been reported of attacks on and harassment of Muslims in different parts of UP. Last week Muslims in Bareilly were asked to stop using loudspeakers for Azan.
