Family of 28-year-old Aamir names Bajrang Dal members in FIR; police appeal for calm

NEW DELHI – Aamir, a 28-year-old Muslim youth, resident of Palla in Haryana, has died in Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi area under disputed circumstances, with his family alleging that members of Bajrang Dal shot him on suspicion of cow smuggling. Police, however, said that while an altercation did occur, the claim of a shooting has not yet been officially confirmed.

The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Chopanki police station in Alwar district late on Thursday night, officials said.

According to relatives of the deceased, the victim had travelled to Bhiwadi when he was allegedly intercepted by a group they identified as Bajrang Dal members. The family claims he was shot during the confrontation.

“He was killed in cold blood,” a family member alleged. “They accused him of cow smuggling and opened fire.”

Following the incident, Aamir’s family lodged a named First Information Report (FIR) against several individuals. Police confirmed that a case has been registered and investigations are ongoing.

Superintendent of Police Prashant Kiran reached the site along with officers from multiple police stations to assess the situation. Authorities stated that while an encounter between Aamir and members of the group did occur, it is premature to confirm that he died from gunshot wounds.

A senior police official said, “An altercation took place. However, the exact cause of death will only be known after the post-mortem examination. A medical board has been constituted to conduct the autopsy.”

Police also stated that a pickup vehicle was found near the deceased and that five cattle were recovered from it. “The vehicle and animals have been seized as part of the investigation,” an officer added.

Officials emphasised that no conclusions would be drawn until forensic and medical reports are completed.

The incident has led to tension in parts of Bhiwadi and nearby areas. Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, and authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm.

Local administration officials said patrols have been intensified in sensitive pockets to prevent any escalation.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. People should not spread rumours,” a district official said.

The allegation that Aamir was targeted on suspicion of cow smuggling comes against the backdrop of previous incidents linked to cow protection vigilantism in parts of northern India.

In February 2023, Junaid and Nasir, residents of Nuh in Haryana, were found dead after their vehicle was allegedly set ablaze in Rajasthan. The case triggered widespread outrage and led to the arrest of Monu Manesar, who was named as a key accused. The matter remains under judicial process.

Civil rights groups have repeatedly raised concerns over incidents where individuals have been attacked on suspicion of cow smuggling or cattle transport, urging stricter action against vigilantism.

In the present case, police reiterated that all angles are being examined. “We will proceed strictly and based on evidence,” an officer said. “If anyone is found responsible, appropriate legal action will be taken.”

The post-mortem report is expected to provide clarity regarding the cause of death. Authorities have also begun questioning individuals named in the FIR.

As investigations continue, officials have urged the public to rely only on verified information and to avoid sharing unconfirmed claims on social media.

The situation in Bhiwadi remains tense, but under control, police said, adding that further updates would be shared once forensic findings are available.
