NEW DELHI — A Muslim youth got mercilessly beaten up by police officials when he asked them to remove their shoes before entering a mosque.

Junaid Babu, a resident of Darvespur village in Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh, said police officials had arrived at the mosque earlier this week to remove the loudspeaker used for Azaan (call to prayer) at the mosque and attempted to enter the mosque premises with their shoes on.

The police officials entered the mosque with their shoes on paying no heed to Babu’s umpteen requests. On their way back from the mosque after removing the loudspeaker, the officers confronted him, stating “Ye zyada bol raha hai” (He is speaking too much), media reports said.

In a video, Junaid said police officials physically assaulted him in custody. He claimed that he was subjected to punches and severe beatings with sticks, resulting in visible bruises on his body. “I have sustained bruises on my body, hands, and ears. They thrashed me and threatened to imprison me if I revealed the beating to someone. They even recorded a video of me before I was allowed to leave,” he said in the video.
