Muslim Organisations Take Lead in Relief and Rescue Work in Flood Affected Maharashtra Region

NEW DELHI — As flood hit some districts of Maharashtra due to heavy monsoon rainfall since July 22 causing huge devastation, some Muslim groups took upon themselves to do relief works in the affected areas for quite some days.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH) and Popular Front of India (PFI) are some of the groups engaged in yeoman’s service providing relief to affected people and doing rescue works amid floods which caused havoc in coastal districts of Maharashtra — Ratnagiri and Raigad claiming more than 200 lives.

Floods caused heavy destruction which put the people in miserable position. The volunteers taking stock of the situation.

In a statement on Saturday, Maharashtra JIH informed that its President Rizwanur Rahman, along with Vice-President Syed Zameer Qadri, visited Konkan and inspected Chiplun, Mahad and other surrounding towns that have been destroyed by the floods. They spoke to the flood victims and assured them of all possible support.

Jamaat leaders held meetings with several social workers and heads of community centres and NGOs to discuss plans for rehabilitation.

Rahman averred that all social organisations need to come together and co-operate with each other to ensure that every flood victim should get proper help and relief material and that no deserving person is left out.

During his visit, Jamaat state chief also announced that his organisation would spend ₹1,50,00,000 (One crore 50 Lac rupees) towards rehabilitation of the people who lost everything in floods. Those who have lost their livelihood in this calamity would be helped in restarting their businesses. Also, those houses which have been destroyed or partially damaged would be reconstructed/repaired. A proper survey has been initiated to facilitate this process, said Rahman.

Rahman informe that Jamaat had commenced relief work on July 23 itself. The JIH cadre is being assisted in this task by members of the Ideal Relief Committee Trust, IRW, Youth Wing, Students’ Islamic Organisation (SIO), and Medical Service Society (MSS). These volunteers have not only distributed cooked food, medicines, bottled water, and blankets, but they have also cleaned wells, roads, schools, and residential buildings and houses so as to make them usable.

Members of the Ideal Relief Wing have been professionally trained to work in such emergency relief operations.

Under the leadership of JIH Maharashtra, a team of 17 members of the Youth Wing, IRW, MSS, and SIO from Mumbai and Mumbra reached Chiplun on the 24th of July with two truckloads of relief material. They were followed in quick succession by several teams from Mumbai, Solapur, Parli, Pune, Nagpur, Nanded, and other cities. These volunteers, affiliated with JIH and its sister organisations, spread out across Chiplun to provide necessary relief. They are still on the ground, engaged in all sorts of relief work.

On emergency basis Jamaat had done the survey in Chiplun, Murad Nagar, Rajewadi, Kondeote and distributed 1500 kitchen kits sets.

Jamaat said that till date, it has distributed 3400 bottles of water, 4200 food packets, ration to 500 families, medicines, and 1500 emergency lights. More than one lakh rupees have been offered as emergency aid to some forty families. 14 wells and 7 water tanks have been cleaned in Chiplun. Several schools, buildings, and Masajid have also been cleaned.

 Jamaat also set up a medical camp there. A mobile medical van is also being used to address the health concerns of the affected populace. More than 500 patients have been benefitted and received timely medical help.

Cleaning material has also been provided to more than 800 families after a survey of about 50 houses of Mahad and Rajewadi.

Jamaat-e-Islami Maharashtra has also appealed to the masses to contribute generously in this relief work.

Jamiat-i-Ulama Hind (JUH), led by Maulana Arshad Madani, is also engaged in this humanitarian relief work in Maharashtra as the loss and destruction caused by the floods in coastal regions of the state is beyond expectation.

In a statement on Sunday, JUH said that the group is engaged in providing relief to all the flood affected people in at least 11 villages irrespective of caste and religion. It has also formed three teams of doctors and sent them to affected areas to deal with the diseases caused by floods.

JUH President Maulana Arshad Madani expressed great concerns over the devastating flood. He said that they stood with the victims and assured that JUH will help the affected people at all levels.

Madani also urged the government to work towards rehabilitating the displaced people who lost everything in the flood and informed that Jamiat is also making plans to do the rehabilitation works after surveying the area.

Popular Front of India (PFI) is also engaged in rescue and relief work among the flood affected people of Maharashtra and posted photos and videos informing about their relief works.
