BHILWARA – About 20 years ago, in a small village of Rajasthan’s Bhilwara District, Durga Kanwar formed an unbreakable bond with Zakir Hussain Rangrez, a Muslim man, by tying a rakhi (bond of protection) on his wrist and embracing him as her brother. This unique relationship has flourished over the years, transcending religious boundaries and showcasing the beauty of interfaith harmony.

Recently, this bond was on full display during the wedding of Durga Kanwar’s two daughters. With her parents no longer alive, Durga found unwavering support in her “brother” Zakir Hussain, who, along with his entire family, fulfilled all the traditional roles of a maternal uncle in the pre-wedding and wedding rituals.

The wedding ceremonies featured the Rajasthani Hindu tradition of the Bhat or Maira ceremony, where the bride’s maternal uncle symbolically brings gifts, sweets, and clothes, marking the beginning of celebrations. Zakir Hussain and his family participated wholeheartedly, respecting and embracing Hindu customs.

Zakir Hussain arrived at the wedding venue with his family, carrying drums and tarps that reverberated with joy and togetherness throughout the village. The families of Durga Kanwar and her husband, Shankar Singh Rao, welcomed Zakir’s family with rose petals and garlands, highlighting the warmth and respect shared between the two families.

“It was a moment of pure happiness and unity,” said Shankar Singh Rao, describing the festivities. “Zakir Hussain has not only stood by us over the years but has also brought immense joy and dignity to our family by being part of this occasion.”

The presence of Zakir Hussain’s extended family, including Haji Hanif Muhammad, Ghulam Nabi, Shero Muhammad, Piroo Muhammad, Ashiq Hussain, and others, added to the celebratory spirit. Together, they performed the Bhat ritual with great enthusiasm, blending traditions with mutual respect.

Reflecting on the occasion, Zakir Hussain shared, “This bond with Durga is beyond religion. It’s about being there for each other, come what may. To see her daughters get married and to play a role in their happiness fills my heart with pride.”

The invitation card for the twin weddings even mentioned that “Uncle Zakir Hussain and his family will bring the Bhat,” a detail that garnered appreciation from the community for its inclusive spirit. Local dignitaries, including Thakur Vijender Singh of Mod Ka Nambada, Sarpanch’s representative Bhagwan Mali, and several others, attended the event, acknowledging the significance of this interfaith demonstration.

The marriage celebrations became a symbol of unity, as villagers witnessed a touching display of respect for Hindu traditions by a Muslim family. “This is what humanity is all about,” said Haji Muhammad Hanif, a member of Zakir Hussain’s family. “Religious differences mean nothing when hearts are united.”

In a time often marked by division, this story of interfaith brotherhood serves as a poignant reminder of the power of love, mutual respect, and shared traditions in fostering social harmony.
