NEW DELHI – Family members of a Muslim man have alleged custodial torture and exertion after he died in the police custody in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

An FIR has been filed against eight policemen for murder and abduction at the local police station after family members of 36-year-old Ziyauddin refused to take his body unless cases were filed against the accused. The accused policemen have also been suspended, said the Ambedkar Nagar Police.

Talking to Clarion India about his brother’s custodial death, Shahabuddin said that Ziyaduddin, a resident of Hajipur village in Azamgarh, was missing for the last some days. On Thursday, around 4 O’clock, his family members received a call from a policeman telling them that Ziyauddin fell ill. Later, they were informed by the local police station about Ziyauddin’s death and asked them to come to the Akbarpur government hospital.

“He was given third degree torture. He died because of police brutality. They were also demanding money from my brother. He had told wife that the police were demanding money and if he failed to oblige, he will be killed,” said Shahabuddin.

Ziyauddin is survived by his wife and two young children. He used to sell woods.

According to Shahabuddin, his brother has not ben suffering from any disease. He was a healthy man who would avoid taking medicine even when fell ill. He had neither any criminal background nor any case against him at any police station. However, his name has appeared wrongly in an insignificant case which the complainant was ready to withdraw. But the police claimed that an FIR was registered against Ziyauddin.

“That’s why we are not able to understand as to why the police picked him up and killed. We want justice. The culprits must be arrested. Let them reveal why they killed my brother. What was the crime of my brother,” he said.

According to Shahabuddin, there were marks of torture on every part of his brother’s body. “There was no part of the body left where he had not been hit. It seems a heated rod was used to torture him,” he said.

The Ambedkar Nagar Superintendent of Police, Alok Priyadarshi, has claimed that Ziyauddin died after he fell ill during interrogation. He was taken to the hospital where he died during the treatment, he said on Friday.

He also said that a judicial enquiry has been ordered into his death according to the guidelines laid down by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). And post mortem will be done with videography of the operation.

Azamgarh-based human rights activist Rajiv Yadav visited the family members of the victim and demanded the arrest of the culprits and compensation for his family members. He alleged that several people were currently under illegal police detention. Yadav demanded that they be released and given security.
