Moradabad Burqa Video: Five Minor Students Booked, Police Begin Inquiry

Date:

NNEW DELHI — Police in Uttar Pradesh have registered a case after a short video from Moradabad’s Bilari area showed a Class 12 Hindu student wearing a burqa outside a coaching centre, following a complaint by her brother alleging pressure and coercion.

The incident is linked to a coaching centre near Sahu Kunj, where students from different communities attend classes together. CCTV footage from outside the centre reportedly shows five Muslim students placing a burqa on the girl. Based on the complaint, police have booked the five girls — all minors aged between 15 and 17 — under relevant legal provisions. Officials said juvenile justice norms will be followed.

The girl’s brother told police that his sister was subjected to mental pressure and made uncomfortable. “We want a fair inquiry and assurance of her safety,” he said, alleging attempts to influence her religious choices.

Police said the investigation is at a preliminary stage. A senior officer said authorities are examining CCTV footage, recording statements, and verifying other material evidence. “All those named in the complaint are minors. The inquiry will be conducted carefully and strictly in accordance with the law,” the officer said.

So far, the accused students and their families have not placed their version on record. Local residents said the girls attend the same tuition classes and often leave together after sessions. “They are schoolchildren. The truth should emerge after proper verification,” a neighbour said.

Community members urged restraint and cautioned against public speculation. A local Muslim elder said no child should be targeted or shamed, while a women’s rights volunteer stressed that consent and context must be carefully assessed. “Children need protection from public outrage and misinformation,” she said.

Legal observers noted that allegations of coercion must be established through evidence. “The claims are serious, but minors are entitled to special legal safeguards. Any conclusion must be evidence-based,” said a lawyer familiar with juvenile cases.

Police said further action would depend on the outcome of the inquiry and appealed to the public to maintain calm and avoid spreading unverified claims while the matter is under examination.
