NEW DELHI — Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Friday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for mostly remaining silent on communal violence, mob lynching and cow vigilantism though he often speaks of being PM for all Indians.

Dr. Singh was releasing Congress leader and Lok Sabha Member Shashi Tharoor’s book The Paradoxical Prime Minister – Narendra Modi and His India”.

“He (Modi) has spoken of being a prime minister for all Indians but the govt he presides over has mostly been silent in face of widespread communal violence, mob lynching, cow vigilantism,” Dr. Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.

In the last four and half years of the Modi government at the Centre, several dozen people, mostly Muslims, have been lynched by brutal mobs of cow vigilantes in the name of cow smuggling, cow slaughter and beef consumption. Most of the killings took place in BJP-ruled states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Assam.

The former PM also targeted Modi over the CBI issue.

“Environment of our universities & national institutions like CBI has been vitiated,” he said on the day when the Supreme Court virtually took control of the CBI whose Director and Additional Director were sent on leave by the government in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Dr. Singh also targeted the Modi government over the skyrocketing price of petrol and diesel in the country despite low price of crude oil in the international market.

“Petrol and diesel prices are at historic high despite fall in international crude oil prices because Modi govt chose to levying excessive excise duties instead of passing on benefit of low prices to Indians,” said Dr. Singh.
