‘Unmet promises and utter failure on the economic front’ mark the BJP government’s 11 years in office
NEW DELHI — Senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi has launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government, accusing it of pushing anti-Muslim legislation, ignoring public grievances, and utterly failing on key economic fronts.
Alvi was speaking to news agency ANI earlier this week (June 9) as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government marked 11 consecutive years in office.
The Congress leader said the BJP-led government had consistently enacted policies that adversely affected the Muslim community. He further said the government has completely failed to deliver on broader promises such as controlling inflation, generating employment, or ensuring social justice.
“I say this with regret—be it the law on triple talaq, or the changes to Waqf laws—you are doing everything in this country which is against Muslims,” Alvi said.
Criticising the government’s 2016 demonetisation move, Alvi said it had caused widespread hardship without achieving its stated goals. “During demonetisation, people died standing in queues in the heat. You claimed black money and terrorism would end—have they? Just recently, lives were lost in Pahalgam due to terrorism,” he said.
Turning to Kashmir, Alvi denounced the abrogation of Article 370, stating that while the region was heavily militarised and political leaders jailed, core issues remained unaddressed. “You put 8 lakh soldiers there, but did you provide jobs to the youth? Did you bring down inflation?” he asked.
Alvi also criticised the government’s handling of farmers’ protests and soaring fuel prices. “Farmers protested for two years, yet the government refused to listen. You buy petrol for ₹35-₹40, but sell it to the public at ₹100,” he said.
The BJP has previously rejected such criticism, maintaining that its governance model has benefited all sections of society and ensured national security and development.
