Massive Anti-CAA Protest Led by Chandrashekhar Azad Held at Jama Masjid Delhi

NEW DELHI — Tens of thousands of people took part in the protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and NRC held outside Delhi’s Shahi Jama Masjid on Friday afternoon.

Despite barriers put up by Delhi police and enforcement of Section 144 in Delhi areas, people managed to reach the spot and joined the huge protest March which was scheduled to reach Jantar Mantar from Jama Masjid but police stopped the sloganeering marchers at iconic Delhi Gate.

The rally was held at the call of Chandrashekhar Azad, social activist and lawyer and also the co-founder and president of Bhim Army and was supported by dozens other organisations. Chandrashekhar Azad was himself there to lead the protest.

The participants who came from near and distant places, having placards in their hands shouted anti-Modi and ant- government slogans vigorously for bringing in controversial law of citizenship.

Police were on their toes to control the huge mob of protesters and twu nearby metro station were closed for the commuters. The whole area, according to reports was being monitored through drones by police.

The protest march, however, remained peaceful. Protesters refused to go violent even after the police stopped them from moving ahead of Delhi Gate. The protests are being held across the cities in India against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and NRC.

As per the new Citizenship Act, non-Muslim migrants from neighbouring countries, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, living in India will get citizenship, while the claim of Muslims from these countries who came in as refugees or illegals will not be considered.

Meanwhile, Jafrabad area of North-East Delhi is reported to be tense as a large number of people gathered there after Friday prayer to protest against CAA. A large contingent of police force are deployed there to control the situation.

On Tuesday, a protest rally against CAA and NRC was held in Seelampur, nearby Jafrabad in which thousand of people participated, which had taken a violent turn as the police tried to stop the marchers.
