HYDERABAD — The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) has withheld the results of 40 students across various batches for illegally closing the gate of the university protesting against the hike in mess fee.

M A Azeem, proctor of the university said the decision was taken following a thorough probe by a three-member fact-finding team that was constituted by the competent authority to look into the issue.

The students had staged a protest at the central university gate barring the entry of teaching and non-teaching staff and other stake holders of MANUU on June 6 and 7 after mess fee was increased in May.

The Committee after verifying the facts related to the incidence of misconduct and indiscipline, based on the severity of the offence of students, recommended punishment proportionate to the degree of involvement of every student in the protest in the purview of MANUU Students conduct & Discipline Rules, 2014, according to Proctor’s order.

On August 18, MANUU had issued orders to expel 16 students from the hostel and also levy a fine of  Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 on them. They were even barred from applying for fresh admission for the next three years.

Proctor M.A. Azeem said that if students has an issue with the hike in Mess fee by Rs 600-700, they have every right to protest, but why close the university gates causing inconvenience to the taching and non-teaching staff?

“The university has no role in mess affairs as it is entirely managed by the students and the mess incharge who do the procurement and planning, then why protest against the university?” said M A Azeem, proctor of MANUU.

The committee has also recommended to bar students from contesting elections in future and to fill an apology form.

The students, however, are distraught and shocked by the university’s strict actions. Mohammad Abuhamza, vice-president of the MANUU Stydents Union 2021-22 said, “The 16 students who are expelled includes a Masters Graduate who qualified for Phd in the same university bu now due to three-year-ban, the students career is ruined.”

He further said the student whose results are withheld are also in distress as at least five of them have completed their final semester this year and require marks sheets for placement in both MNCs and government offices.

The universiy, however, maintained that the results will be released only if the students pay fine and sign a declaration stating that they will steer clear of such activities in the future.
