NEW DELHI — A suspended professor at the Manipal Institute of Technology, who allegedly called a Muslim student ‘Kasab’ and hurled other epithets at him in the classroom, has been reinstated by the institute.

A viral video six months ago showed the professor allegedly abusing the student in the presence of all of his classmates.

By calling the student ‘Kasab’, the professor was referring to Ajmal Kasab, a Pakistani terrorist and a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, who was hanged in 2012 for his role in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks

The professor has not been assigned any teaching duty with the student also not wanting to take any further action against him, media reports said.

“The professor has not been sacked but has been punished. We have taken a very stringent disciplinary action against him. He is currently under good mentoring and monitoring,” Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. (Dr) M.D. Venkatesh was quoted in the media as saying.

The institute had also constituted a disciplinary committee to investigate the professor.

In the video, which went viral in November 2022, the student was shown to be lashing out against his professor for allegedly calling him ‘Kasab’.

The video shows the student questioning the professor over his remarks as the latter defends it by saying that the student is like his son.

“Will you talk to your son like that? Will you call him by the name of a terrorist?” argues the student as the professor is heard to be apologising in the video.
