NEW DELHI – Sunny Raj, the prime accused in the case of urinating inside the mosque in Jharkhand’s Giridih district, has turned out to be an employee of Amazon India.

A news website, enewsroom.in, reported that the local police visited Amazon India’s Bangalore branch to inquire about the accused where the Amazon officials accepted that the accused works with the company but refused to share any information with the police citing “privacy” issues.

Sunny’s LinkedIn profile shows that he is ‘Process Lead’ at Amazon India and has been associated with the multinational company for over five years and three months now. He completed his MBA degree from Bengaluru. His schooling has been in a convent school in Giridih.

On 4 October, the accused, along with Rohit Raj, Deepalok Mitra and Chandan Gupta, was caught urinating inside the mosque. Their act was captured in CCTV footage.

Informing about the incident, a local said that the accused were nabbed by the locals and handed over to the police.

“While they were being beaten by the locals for their vile act, a police team reached the spot, following which the accused were handed over to them. But, there was a time when people were so agitated that the police had to fire in the air to stop them and disperse the crowd,” said Shabbir Alam, the Mukhiya (panchayat head) of Telodih.

Rohit, who has done hotel management from Bengaluru, runs a restaurant in Giridih. Deepalok is a government contractor, while Chandan deals in real estate. The fifth accused, Babla Keshri, is on the run.

Reportedly, Sunny, who urinated inside the mosque, was repeating the same in another mosque but the worshipper caught him.

The five accused were booked under Sections—109, 153, 153 (A) (2), 245, 295 (A), 296, 12C (B) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the report, the accused are still in jail as their bail application was rejected.

“It is a very serious offence and could not be expected from an educated person or someone who belongs to such a family. We will ensure that their bail gets rejected from the session court too,” Prakash Sahay, the lawyer representing the case from the Masjid Committee, was quoted by the report.

The police said they have found no sign of mental instability in Sunny, which the family had claimed after the incident. “So far, in our investigations, we did not find any truth in this claim by the family,” said a police officer “In fact, it is an intentional and pre-planned act”.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders came out in defence of the accused. They alleged that they were beaten up by the police in front of two Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislators, which JMM leaders denied.
