MUMBAI — A senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Minister, Dr. Nitin Raut was injured and is hospitalised after he was allegedly pushed around by an officer of the Telangana Police on Wednesday, party officials informed.

Hailing from Nagpur, Dr. Raut, 70, is also former President of the Congress’ SC/ST Cell.

The incident occurred when he was walking with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Telangana.

A local senior police officer of ACP rank reportedly pushed Dr. Raut hard and he fell to the ground, suffering injuries on his head, above the right eye and bruises on his hands and legs.

Syed Nizamuddin, spokesperson of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, told Clarion India that when ACP pushed Dr Nitin, he fell to the ground on his head causing hair-line fracture above his right eye. Mr Nizamuddin rushed Dr Nitin to the Vasav Hospital in Hyderabad and got him admitted where city scan was done immediately and he was given timely treatment.

Dr Nitin’s condition is now stable and safe with bruises on his forehead and elsewhere are being taken care off, informed Mr Nizamuddin.

About the provocation for the police’s behaviour, Mr Nizamuddin, who was accompanying Dr Nitin, said it is not actually clear what made the ACP to push Dr Nitin with such a force that he fell on the ground. However, the said ACP apologised for the mistake and he also approached Dr Nitin to seek his forgiveness.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called up Dr. Raut to enquire after his health and wished him speedy recovery, as the yatra continued ahead, towards Maharashtra.

Several other top leaders of the Congress like Paty President Mallikarjun Kharge; AICC office-bearers K.C. Venugopal, K. Raju, Rajesh Lilothia, Imran Pratapgarhi, Kanhaiya Kumar; Telangana Leader of Opposition Hatti Vikramark; and others either called up or visited Dr. Raut at the hospital.

Dr Nitin, along with his supporters, had gone to take part in the walkathon’s Telengana leg before it enters Maharashtra on November 7 in Nanded, where massive preparations are in place to welcome Rahul Gandhi and the other marchers. — (With inputs from IANS)
