VARANASI — Amidst the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, where mismanagement has left thousands of Hindu devotees struggling for accommodation, a Muslim man has emerged as a beacon of humanity. Salim, a resident of Varanasi, has opened the doors of his home to provide shelter to stranded devotees, demonstrating a powerful act of communal harmony.
With all hotels either fully booked or charging exorbitant rates, many pilgrims have found themselves without a place to stay. In this crisis, Salim extended a helping hand, welcoming Hindu devotees into his home. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing emotional scenes of devotees expressing gratitude.
One of the pilgrims, Vedh Singh, shared his experience, saying, “When we reached Salim, he welcomed us warmly. At first, I was hesitant when I realised he was a Muslim, but his kindness made me feel like part of his family.” He further added, “Those who spread hatred between Hindus and Muslims are misleading people. Politicians are responsible for this divide, not the common man.”
Another devotee, Shyam Sharma, expressed his gratitude: “Tell me, if these Muslims had not come to our aid, where would we have gone? When we return to Haryana, we will tell everyone about Saleembhai’s kindness.”
One devotee, Reno, became emotional while recalling her experience. With tears in her eyes, she said, “I never imagined I would receive such respect in a Muslim household. This has been a life-changing experience for me.”
When asked about his gesture, Salim humbly stated, “These devotees can stay here as long as they want. They are welcome to return anytime. I am a social worker, and we do not differentiate between people based on caste or religion.”
He cited the example of Caliph Hazrat Umar (RA), who ruled vast territories yet lived humbly, ensuring even the weakest in society were cared for. Salim recalled a famous incident where Hazrat Umar (RA) wept upon seeing a thirsty dog, fearing he would be held accountable before Allah for its suffering.
This heartwarming incident comes amidst a controversial ban on Muslim participation in Kumbh by the Yogi-led government. A devotee questioned the decision, saying, “When Muslims like Salim are the ones helping us in times of need, how can anyone justify banning them?”
